There are three types of dedicated EC pills: levonorgestrel (progestin-only), ulipristal acetate, and low-dose mifepristone. The mifepristone-based ECPs are available in only a small handful of countries. (Note that while mifepristoneis also used in the “abortion pill” or “medication abortion,” it is used in a much lower dose for EC and taken before pregnancy has begun.) In addition, regular combined birth control pills containing both progestin and estrogen (the “Yuzpe” regimen) can be safely used for EC although they are not labeled for EC use. This table includes only the dedicated EC products.
