Whether building support among decision-makers in health ministries or securing emergency contraception access through the courts, a major focus of the Consortium's work has always been to provide support for EC advocacy.

To respond to the continuing need for EC advocacy tools, the Consortium has developed targeted advocacy materials to support the introduction and expansion of EC. These include:

  • Questions and Answers for Decision-Makers [PDF]
(Currently under revision. Check back soon for updated version in 2011)

  • Talking Points for Spokespersons Responding to Opposition [PDF]
(Currently under revision. Check back soon for updated version in 2011)

The Consortium has also developed policy statements to address key EC issues. These have been used worldwide to strengthen support for EC use and availability. ICEC's fact sheets also present research and strategies in support of EC. In addition, the Emergency Contraception Fast Facts webpage provides a general overview of EC.

Endorsements or position statements supporting emergency contraception have been issued by the World Health Organization (WHO), the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA), and many other health associations. These endorsements can be used to demonstrate support for EC by the international health community.

EC Advocacy Works To:
Educate women, health officials, policy makers about EC's existence, safety, and role in reducing unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions, and as an important part of family planning choices
Create an environment that fosters successful product introduction and success by building awareness of EC
Draw attention to addressing women's reproductive health needs within the greater context of family planning--- emphasizing the idea that women can choose whether or not they get pregnant.
