Working Together To Make EC Available Globally

The collective power of ICEC's member agencies has been extremely effective in increasing access to emergency contraception across the globe. The participation of prominent international agencies has been a key to the Consortium's success in working with country-level policy makers and family planning programs.

The Consortium brings together expertise in areas critical to increasing women's access to emergency contraception across the globe: product registration, training, contraceptive introduction and service delivery, advocacy, and research.

How We Work

Consortium activities are managed by an independent coordinator - no single member agency takes the lead. An independent evaluation of ICEC found that by joining forces to implement projects, the group has achieved a level of influence that exceeds the sum of it's individual members.

As one Consortium member put it, "The Consortium had power because it had a common objective, common goals, common output, and a common modus vivendi. If the various member organizations had just done their own thing, we would not have advanced the cause of emergency contraception so quickly."

"In our country, thanks to the Consortium as a sponsoring agency, we were able to awaken opinion leaders and government officials. The Consortium has been essential for introducing emergency contraception, for showing its importance, and for demonstrating that its acceptance is possible."
