ECafrique is a bilingual (French/English) international network of health care and business professionals seeking to expand the availability of quality emergency contraception (EC) services in Africa. This regional consortium covers both Anglophone and Francophone Africa and includes over 800 institutional and individual members. Its members come from more than 40 countries including 35 of Africa’s 56 countries.
The network functions as a non-political, voluntary association, guided by consensus among members, and mindful of Africa’s broad ethnic, cultural, and political diversity.
The overall coordinator is Dr. Saumya RamaRao, Senior Associate at the Population Council. Until recently, ECafrique was managed by the Population Council and regularly published a bilingual newsletter with extensive information about EC in Africa. Going forward, the ECafrique online community will be hosted through ICEC. ECafrique members will continue to get news and updates about EC from ICEC or other partners.
- Serve as a forum for the exchange of ideas among professionals in the health care and pharmaceutical sectors.
- Inspire interest and encourage new initiatives in the provision of EC services in countries where there is an unmet need for them.
- Build collectively the knowledge and experience base needed to introduce, improve, and mainstream the delivery of quality EC services, with a specific focus on the needs and challenges of Africa.
