EC Status and Availability


Registered LNG-EC products:

  • Escapelle* - Available only with prescription

Registered UPA-EC products:

  • ellaOne* - Available directly from pharmacist without prescription (i.e. BTC)

Products marked with * have been approved by a stringent regulatory authority, such as the WHO Prequalification Programme, the US Food and Drug Administration, the European Medicines Agency, or other.

Age restrictions for accessing ECPs: Yes

Type of age restriction: EC is available by prescription to women aged 18 years and older. Minors below the age of 18 must have parental permission to obtain a prescription.

Pricing information: LNG: € 11,58, as of 2013; UPA: € 30,11, as of 2013.

Other relevant information: Poland's 2009 Essential Medicines List does not include EC.

Both doctors and pharmacists in Poland have been known to invoke the conscience clause and have refused to provide EC to women who requested it.
